1 Friendship, like love, is but a name,
2 Unless to one you stint the flame.
3 The child, whom many fathers share,
4 Hath seldom known a father’s care;
5 ‘Tis thus in friendships; who depend
6 On many, rarely find a friend.
7 A hare, who, in a civil way,
8 Complied with ev’ry thing, like Gay,
9 Was known by all the bestial train,
10 Who haunt the wood, or graze the plain:
11 Her care was, never to offend,
12 And ev’ry creature was her friend.
13 As forth she went at early dawn
14 To taste the dew-besprinkled lawn,
15 Behind she hears the hunter’s cries,
16 And from the deep-mouth’d thunder flies;
17 She starts, she stops, she pants for breath,
18 She hears the near advance of death,
19 She doubles, to mis-lead the hound,
20 And measures back her mazy round;
21 ‘Till, fainting in the public way,
22 Half dead with fear she gasping lay.
23 What transport in her bosom grew,
24 When first the horse appear’d in view!
25 ‘Let me,’ says she, ‘your back ascend,
26 And owe my safety to a friend,
27 You know my feet betray my flight,
28 To friendship ev’ry burthen’s light.’
29 The horse replied, ‘Poor honest puss,
30 It grieves my heart to see thee thus;
31 Be comforted, relief is near;
32 For all your friends are in the rear.’
33 She next the stately bull implor’d;
34 And thus reply’d the mighty lord.
35 ‘Since ev’ry beast alive can tell
36 That I sincerely wish you well,
37 I may, without offence, pretend
38 To take the freedom of a friend;
39 Love calls me hence; a fav’rite cow
40 Expects me near yon barley mow:
41 And when a lady’s in the case,
42 You know, all other things give place.
43 To leave you thus might seem unkind;
44 But see, the goat is just behind.’
45 The goat remark’d her pulse was high,
46 Her languid head, her heavy eye;
47 ‘My back,’ says he, ‘may do you harm;
48 The sheep’s at hand, and wool is warm.’
49 The sheep was feeble, and complain’d,
50 His sides a load of wool sustain’d,
51 Said he was slow, confess’d his fears;
52 For hounds eat sheep as well as hares.
53 She now the trotting calf addrest,
54 To save from death a friend distrest.
55 ‘Shall I, says he, of tender age,
56 In this important care engage?
57 Older and abler pass’d you by;
58 How strong are those! how weak am I!
59 Should I presume to bear you hence,
60 Those friends of mine may take offence.
61 Excuse me then. You know my heart,
62 But dearest friends, alas, must part!
63 How shall we all lament! Adieu.
64 For see the hounds are just in view.’
How strange… that one with so many friends can yet feel so alone…
Proverbs 18:24
A man of many companions may come to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Expended.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

A theme, if you will, of my thoughts for the past while has been about abundance. The abundance of life, everything in it. All the friends, family and new people I’m meeting. The richness of that fellowship. The richness in the beauty of nature. How blessed we are. So many lessons, so many steps. As mentioned somewhere, strung throughout, my previous long post, there’s so much room for growth. So many experiences through life, and so many more to come. There’s so much I want to do. People to meet, youngin’s to teach, peers to build up, things to do, books to read, knowledge to acquire, character to build, focus to discipline, God to worship. If we idle we strip ourselves of so much.
An old nursery rhyme that Jim noted, along the same lines of what I have just written:
The world is so full of a number of things,
I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.

*I’m sorry this will likely be confusing. It will be incoherent. A small sample of of thoughts I’ve had this past week. Issues that are not new, but are brought out in new light and to new realization. I should be more consistent in writing these thoughts, so that they do not come out as they do now - jumbled.
There are people that accomplish so much in their lifetime. We look and revere. Astounded. In admiration. What is the difference between them and us? Yes there are certain circumstantial things. But, truly, we do not spend our time productively. We do not determinedly run after things.
Hours of MSNing or something on the computer, surfing perhaps. Dreadful waste. Idling away. We aren’t growing. Do not excuse yourself trying to rationalize that you’d be disconnected with friends. Spending less time online is not disconnecting yourself from the world. See them in person. For those who are away, use the phone. Send mail or e-mails. As with many cliches, this one is bound in truth - it’s about quality time, not quantity.
I’m not only thinking about MSN, though. Perhaps it’s TV, or just sitting about. I don’t know what, but for so great a majority of us, young or old, life just passes by. We enjoy ourselves or just pass the time. Do we not see all the room there is for growth? All the opportunities to serve? Will we grow in age but not mature otherwise?
Do you make the best use of your time at all times? Idle on the bus? Or read an enriching book? Review bible memory verses? Have an encouraging conversation with the one sitting beside you?
Do you look to have a crowd out. Grab a bunch of your friends to hangout somewhere, catch a movie, etc. Yes that is certainl a part of our lives. But what an intriguing and real idea Jim Elliot has brought up. Has it ever occured to you to get together with your friends and have a night of studying God’s Word? I’m not talking about cell groups or bible studies, per se. Those are great. But are you so Christ-centered and fuelled that if you’re with a bunch of friends trying to decide what to do for the night, would be your first idea of something to do. Something so meaningful to you that it is “casually” brought up as real plan.
Do you smile when you walk about wherever, whenever? Beaming with God’s radiance. Absolutely filled to the brim with joy. No, more than that. Overflowing with the living water. Are you a reservoir becoming like the dead sea? Receiving but not giving? Or will be a distributary. A node which channels outward in all directions. As happy-go-lucky as some would say I am, I have found that I can’t be grinning from ear to ear all the time (i.e. on the bus). What shame it is that people of society now are so estranged even amidst the closeness of urbanization and expanse of telecommunications. Why don’t we smile and greet strangers all the time? Or any of the time. I pray I could and would be thus filled. Don’t force the smile. Simply be so captivated by the spirit of grace that you cannot help but glow.
Enough for now… I have to finish PDEng, eat dinner, and go to AWANA.
What shame, those who call themselves Christians. Will we only battle stagnation and constantly struggle to get to the place where the real service and war begins? Or will we go. Now.

For those of you that don’t know, I love art. Among other career considerations I’ve had over my life, a serious one was being an artist / 3D animation artist. My appreciation for art isn’t limited to just this, but Macross Zero is an anime with stunning visuals - both 2D and 3D animated.
Go look at the purdy pictures.

Day or two ago absolutely out of the blue, without having heard it somewhere earlier in recent memory, my started playing the song “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch” in my head (by the Four Tops, not Clay Aiken [ahemm Laura]…).
Another song that strikes a chord now is Gundam Seed - Find The Way, the third ending theme song. Gundam Seed… that was a moving series. So’s Rurouni Kenshin, especially the movies. So much emotional nostalgia when rewatching Kenshin movies and Gundam Seed Destiny.

The clouds of life clear not
And grow not dimmer as we age
Yet in constancy of change
While obstructing the clarity
Of the azure vast
Through them only
Is the beauty and brilliance
The majesty of the heavens displayed
