Testimony

My journey to God has been a long and continuing one. Of my background, to begin with, my family is not Christian–not one in the 5 or 6 family units that I know.

Born in 1986 in ShenZhen, China (right next HK), I moved with my mom to Vancouver as a “Made in China” export just before the age of 7. In China my dad was an officer in a governmental ministry and my mom was a marketing executive in an oil company. Things were smooth, but in moving to Canada we suffered from the sick currency exchange and a non-recognition of work experience. Because of this, dad worked manual labour jobs to get us by while mom learned English and accounting.

Unwelcomed

Posted in CCF at 12:28 pm by Bily Xiao

Went to this church in Oshawa for the second time this term yesterday. As with the first time, I felt almost entirely unwelcomed by my college peers there–only the sunday school teacher (who’s a pastor actually) welcomed me. Neither upon my entrance nor during the “loiter” time after sunday school did anyone approach me or greet me at all. Not the slightest head nod nor eye contact. I sat waiting a bit to see what would happen; I was even sitting right beside some ppl and looked in their direction, hoping they’d bring me into the talk. Nope.

CCF Committee

Posted in CCF Committee at 3:24 am by Bily Xiao

The following are thoughts and revelation, as God speaks through me, in this current time of prayer and contemplation in consideration of my appointment to Vice-Chair for the summer. A leader in committee is:

  1. sensitive to the needs of the fellowship beyond a superficial level. the sensitivity reflects either or both an aptitude beneficial in visioning/planning and a spirit at work with the care to think of such things
  2. heart and passion to see the God’s kingdom advance in and through the fellowship
  3. humility and earnestness seeking God
  4. teachable and constantly desiring growth of self in the spirit
  5. proactive in seeking the opinions and wisdom of others — I think of the meeting Vanessa called in 2A discussing ‘passing the torch’ those younger
  6. proactive in exhortation and teaching
  7. engaged and determined in empowering the fellowship
  8. desiring to unite the fellowship, to change the campus, to revolutionize… Vision

Blood Diamond

I watched Blood Diamond yesterday. A terrific movie.
Intense, RIVETING (ha!), disturbing, stirring.

Portrayed in the movie, the rebel groups know no limit in their exploitation of children and ravaging of settlements. The government itself may be working to fund the rebels in their corruption. The general public are too scared or too weak to fight back, or are even brainwashed into joining forces of madness.

We know so little of what goes on over there… so little of what goes on over here. So little of all the wrong that really goes on in the world. A world of pain which we are far far from, the fullest extent of which we hardly fathom. We know so little of how our economy and our very lifestyle whets the greedy capitalistic appetites of people all around the world. There are secret dealings on both sides of the world and by both the wild buck and the corporation executives. It’s staggering…

I missed a CCF last term when a guest speaker from International Justice Mission (IJM) came to speak on the sex trade… many had their eyes opened to the world of evil in which we live. I’m glad I watched Blood Diamond: not the first I’ve heard of such injustice, but certainly a vivid and jolting one.

Turning the other cheek

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:31 am by Bily Xiao

In CCF Bible Study this past Friday we looked into Luke 6:27-38 to gain a better understanding of the model of love Christ teached and practiced. The passage offers much wisdom with philosophies which conflict very much with worldly perspectives. Many groups found themselves debating over the meaning of “turning the other cheek”: framed perhaps in the balance of love and strength… wondering whether or not we are to be spineless.
