A day of rest: be careful and carefree!

Posted in Spiritual Formation at 9:55 pm by Bily Xiao

Today I begin what I hope to be a lifelong joy and practice of Sabbath keeping.

A day of rest… Around the end of last summer I pondered how we strive to keep the Ten Commandments, but so blatantly shrug off this one. At the start of last term (2B) I actually decided I’d do do it and was fairly excited about that. The term started off terribly with my horrendous last minute scramble to do my work report in the first week. I figured second week things were still easy so I took it easy, indeed. Third week rolled around and I was absorbed in drama practices for CCF Lifesong. I hadn’t taken a single day of wholesome Sabbath rest. After these initial three weeks my sabbath-keeping commitment had been lost under the un-ending and insurmountable mound of schoolwork.

Christian Lawyer Criticized

Scandal Puts Spotlight on Christian Law School

Regent University school of law mission to train Biblically-minded christian conservative lawyers to, in their part, change the world.

Used to be that the school accepted and churned out very poorly qualified individuals, with much not even passing the BAR exam.

The recent scandal spotlight is there because since 2001 Bush administration came in place many of the less-qualified new graduates with little to no experience were put into very significant roles within government. Of particular notice is one alumni who works with attornety general Alberto Gonzales, who, himself, has come under the limelight in great scrutiny of late.

A good read. A Christian school needs to still uphold very real worldly levels of competence. It had me reflecting on how, in many ways, good intentions is not enough.

Fortunately, in recent 5-10 years (I think around there) it’s improved drastically and has in certain areas/competitions rivaled Ivy league schools.

Leadership Dualities

Posted in Leadership, Linkage at 3:48 pm by Bily Xiao

Very true… the two sides of excellent leadership.

Professional Will
1) Creates superb results, a clear catalyst in the transition from good to great.
2) Demonstrates an unwavering resolve to do whatever must be done to produce the best long-term results, no matter how difficult.
3) Sets the standard of building an enduring great company; will settle for nothing less.
4) Looks in the mirror, not out the window, to apportion responsibility for poor results, never blaming other people, external factors, or bad luck.

Personal Humility
1) Demonstrates a compelling modesty, shunning public adulation; never boastful.
2) Acts with quiet, calm determination; relies principally on inspired standards, not inspiring charisma, to motivate.
3) Channels ambition into the company, not the self; sets up successors for even greater success in the next generation.
4) Looks out the window, not in the mirror, to apportion credit for the success of the company—to other people, external factors, and good luck.

What’s a Hero?

Posted in Leadership at 3:17 am by Bily Xiao

Uncle Ben was rather on the dot with: “with great power comes great responsibility.”

He married a wise woman: Aunt May spoke something of much encouragement to me as well. When Peter Parker was just about set to retire from his Spiderman role he went to see his Aunt. Little Henry from across the road is around and asks Peter where Spidey had gone. Aunt May comments. I’m rather uncomfortable with the wording: I’m not at all for personal pride, self-achievement and self-generated worth. But that aside, I found the main message to be very poignant…
